What causes acid reflux?
Acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux, occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter, a ring of muscle between the esophagus and the stomach, relaxes abnormally or weakens. This allows stomach acid to flow back up into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest or throat. Several factors can contribute to the development of acid reflux, including certain foods, obesity, pregnancy, smoking, and certain medications. Additionally, hiatal hernias, which occur when the upper part of the stomach and the lower esophageal sphincter move above the diaphragm, can also contribute to the development of acid reflux.
